Flick: Champions League semi-final spot a 'huge success' for Barcelona
Barcelona lost 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, but Hansi Flick's team nevertheless booked a place in the Champions League last four.
Hansi Flick saw no reason to be too downbeat as Barcelona secured their Champions League semi-final spot despite losing to Borussia Dortmund.
LaLiga leaders Barca took another step towards a treble even though they lost 3-1 to Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.
After a 4-0 victory in the first leg, Barca progressed 5-3 on aggregate.
Barca endured the worst single-match xG difference (-3.36) of this season's knockout stages so far.
It is the first time the Blaugrana will feature in the last four of the Champions League since the 2018-19 season, when they memorably capitulated against Liverpool in the second leg.
While Flick, who rested Inigo Martinez and Pedri, acknowledged Barca was far from their best on Tuesday, he reminded his squad of what they had already achieved this term.
"I think everyone here recognises and appreciates the team's performances this season," Flick told reporters.
"[It] was not our best game. I understand the questions in that respect, but I think we still have cause to be happy.
"There was not a great atmosphere in the dressing room, either. It was only when I told them, 'Lads, we're in the semi-final,' that it lifted a bit.
"But of course, that's what the players expect of themselves. They want to win every game. Today, they're a little disappointed, but I think the happiness of going through will prevail.
"We won the first [game] 4-0, and here we have lost 3-1. I think we deserved to reach the semi-final. Dortmund made life difficult for us.
"The atmosphere was extraordinary, but we are in the last four.
"It will be important to analyse this game, but we've played a lot of matches, and it could be normal [to drop the performance level].
"But I am really satisfied with the team and the performances this season. We're still in three competitions.
"We're in the Champions League semi-final. This is a huge success, and we can be happy for that."
Barcelona have progressed despite losing the second leg of a Champions League knockout tie for the first time since the semi-finals in 2014-15 (when they lost 3-2 to Bayern Munich) – which is the season they last won the competition.
"I am really happy to be in the semi-final but disappointed with how we played," Barca defender Jules Kounde told reporters.
"We lacked everything we did well in the first leg: pressing, closing passing lanes. We were not up to it today.
"We made mistakes, switched off. Flick told us we had to improve at half-time. Maybe we did a little in the second half.
"We have to keep going and not stop doing what we have done throughout the season. We have to be happy with the work the team has put in so far."
Barca will take on Bayern or Inter in the last four, with the first leg of that tie coming off the back of the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 26.
