LA Galaxy v Houston Dynamo: Olsen wary of complacency after first win
Houston Dynamo earned their first win of the season last time out, and travel to winless LA Galaxy in search of a first road victory.
Ben Olsen says he was delighted to get Houston Dynamo's first MLS win on the board last weekend but insisted there is still room to improve ahead of a trip to LA Galaxy.
The Dynamo won for the first time in MLS in 2025 against Los Angeles FC, moving them to 13th in the Western Conference.
Houston have also drawn two and lost four of their matches so far this season, but after earning their first victory, they are now looking to get their first win on the road.
Olsen will not let the team rest on their laurels, though, and has urged them to build on last week's positivity.
"It's nice to see some smiles on faces, but I think that's a dangerous place to live because we have a lot of work to do," he said.
"It was a nice result; it's nice to get the first win under our belt, but we need to grow. Still not in a great spot, there's still a lot to improve on.
"We're looking forward to it [going to LA Galaxy]. We'll push each other and keep the intensity high."
LA Galaxy, meanwhile, are the only team in the West yet to record a win this season.
The reigning champions have drawn two and lost five of their matches in MLS, while they were also knocked out of the Concacaf Champions Cup in midweek after a 3-2 defeat to Tigres.
Head coach Greg Vanney acknowledged the team needed to make big improvements, with a focus on getting rid of individual errors.
"Sometimes I can live with it [conceding], it's great play from the other team and that's fine, but in other times, it's an emotional reaction," he said.
"In set-pieces, we need to be more physical and present in the moment, which we'll continue to work on in practice, but in the emotion of a stadium, it doesn't always work.
"We've got to execute in the moment, despite the emotion and fatigue, by adapting. We still have to manage those moments. We need to keep grinding on the training ground."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
LA Galaxy – Christian Ramirez
Christian Ramirez is the only LA Galaxy player to score more than once in MLS so far this year, netting three goals in total.
He has scored his goals from eight shots, accumulating 1.43 expected goals (xG), with only Gabriel Pec bettering either of those tallies among the players (1.66 xG, 27 shots).
Houston Dynamo – Jack McGlynn
Seven of Jack McGlynn's eight career MLS goals have been scored from outside the box, including his strike against Los Angeles FC on Saturday.
Since McGlynn's first career MLS goal in July 2022, only four players have scored more goals from outside the box than McGlynn.
MATCH PREDICTION: LA GALAXY WIN
LA Galaxy have lost only three of their last 17 home matches against Houston in all competitions (W9 D5) dating back to 2008. The Galaxy's last four home wins in the series have been by one-goal margins.
With two points through seven matches, LA Galaxy have equaled the third-worst start to a season in MLS history. Only Colorado Rapids in 2019 (two) and Toronto FC in 2012 (0) have collected fewer than three points from their first eight matches of a season in MLS history.
In fact, LA Galaxy (W0 D2 L5) are the third reigning MLS Cup champion to go winless through seven matches of a season (Columbus Crew in 2009, LA Galaxy in 2003). However, they are expected to win on Saturday and avoid equaling their record of eight straight matches without a win to begin a season in 2003.
Houston earned their first win of the season on Saturday, a 1-0 victory over LAFC (D2 L4). The Dynamo have not won consecutive matches in all competitions since defeating San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps in July last year.
